Frinton on Sea Essex

Until late Victorian times Frinton was a tiny hamlet, comprising a church, several farms and a handful of cottages. The whole area was later purchased by a developer with a view to building an exclusive seaside town for the wealthy to holiday in

Frinton is also of note for being the last target in England to be attacked by the Luftwaffe, in 1944.

Frinton has only three points of entry by road: an un-adopted road from Walton-on-Naze in the north, a residential road and the (no longer manually operated railway barriers) level crossing of the town's railway station.

Frinton was once geographically distinct, but a series of housing estate developments now line the roads between Frinton and the neighbouring settlements of Walton-on-the-Naze, Kirby Cross and Kirby-Le-Soken. Also fairly near Frinton is Thorpe-Le-Soken.

The town has a sandy beach, more than a mile long, with facilities and beach wardens in season, and an area of sea zoned for swimming, sailing and windsurfing. The shore is lined by a promenade along which there are several hundred beach huts. Landward from the promenade is a long greensward stretching from the boundary with Walton-on-Naze to the golf club in the south.

The town has a reputation for having a particularly conservative nature (although it was in a Labour constituency from 1997 to 2005). Until recently there were no public houses within its boundaries, although there have long been bars serving alcohol in the various seafront hotels, and at the Golf and War Memorial clubs. The first public house in the town was opened in 2000.

Shopping in Connaught Avenue (in the past dubbed the "Bond Street" of East Anglia.). Immaculately clean sandy beaches, historic tree lined avenues,
Coastal walks and the Frinton summer theatre.

Often known for its numerous Churches and lack of pubs (there is only 1, which was given the go ahead in 2000) this is a quiet seaside town.
Also famous for "The Frinton Gates", which despite a current battle to keep the landmark at Frinton's entrance have now been replaced with electric barriers.
The railway gates have often been referred to as a status divide, living "inside the gates" supposedly having more status than living "outside the gates".
The sea front is still lined by many Victorian style beach huts,
reminiscent of the days when the town was a favourite retreat for the aristocracy and even royalty.

Frinton Golf Club is one of the oldest in Essex having been founded way back in 1892, and was originally laid out as a nine-hole course before being extended by Willie Park Junior almost a decade later in 1904.

Frinton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club is one of the country's most prestigious tennis clubs. Founded in 1899, the club initially catered for tennis, croquet and bowls. Three of the biggest events at the club are the ITF Futures, ITF Veterans and LTA Junior Open tournaments. The ITF Veteran's and Junior Open Tournaments are grade 3 events, which is the same level as Wimbledon's equivalent.
