Walton On the Naze

Walton is a traditional seaside town with many of its original features still evident to this day. Walton has a fascinating history, wonderful walks and nature reserves, the second longest pier in Britain and of course miles of golden sandy beaches.

Just north of the town lies the Naze Public Open Space - the 'jewel in the crown' of Walton's attractions - a beautiful unspoilt promontory of acid grass coastal heathland and scrub woodland with salt marsh to the north of the existing sea wall.

Dominating the Naze is the Naze Tower. Built in 1720, it is one of the oldest navigational seamarks around our coastline. Recently refurbished you can now climb to the very top for some great views.

The Naze Cliffs are a magnificent but fast disappearing sight as the relentless sea takes its toll. Formed two million years ago, they are composed of rarely seen 'red crag' - highly vulnerable to the effects of erosion and full of fossils.

The Maritime Museum - maintained by the Frinton & Walton Heritage Trust - opens midsummer afternoons in the Old Walton Lifeboat House. It is full of historic and geological interest unique to the coastal area.

The enchanting creeks and islands behind Walton-on-the-Naze are sheltered from the sea by the Naze Peninsula. They're full of rare natural history and are home to their own colony of seals!

Washed daily by the North Sea high tide and extending far out to sea at low water, the Walton-on-the-Naze beaches are among the cleanest in the British Isles and excellent for building sand castles.
